[tweetmeme]The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) submitted the following comments to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on key issues facing the agency and suggestions on how to improve the health and safety of workers on February 10, 2010 as part of the OSHA listens tour.  Regarding  what OSHA can do to enhance and encourage the efforts of employers, workers, and unions to identify and address workplace hazards?

  1.  Do more outreach outside of the compliance arm on communicating top health and safety issues in various industries.
  2. Retain the VPP Program.
  3. Work toward passage of a required written health and safety program for the workplace.
  4. Increase criminal penalties to a level that is taken seriously.
  5. Provide greater outreach to small business.
  6. Increase enforcement and increase compliance assistance.

AIHA will be appearing at the “OSHA Listens” meeting on Thursday, March 4 to provide input on actions the agency might consider pursuing in the future.   AIHA submitted extended comments to OSHA per agency request, the extended comments can be found at
